Scope
Specifies four methods for determining the hardness of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubbers on flat surfaces (standard-hardness methods) and four methods for the apparent hardness of curved surfaces (apparent-hardness methods), expressed in international rubber hardness degrees (IRHD) over the range 10 IRHD to 100 IRHD.
The methods differ mainly in the diameter of the indenting ball and the magnitude of the indenting force.
What the Result Tells You
A test to DIN ISO 48-2 characterises the hardness of the material or assembly under the conditions the method fixes: specimen form, rate of loading and the environment in which the test is run.
Because the numbers depend on those fixed conditions, a result is only meaningful when the report names the standard, the edition and any options the method allows.
