At a Glance
Document type: Safety standard (type-B2 per ISO 12100).
Edition: current edition ISO 13850:2015.
Scope
Specifies functional requirements and design principles for the emergency stop function on machinery, independent of the type of energy used to control the function.
Applicable to all machinery except machines in which an emergency stop would not lessen the risk, and hand-held portable and hand-guided machines.
Does not deal with functions such as reversal or limitation of motion, deflection, shielding, braking or disconnecting, which can be part of the emergency stop function.
What the Result Tells You
Because the numbers depend on those fixed conditions, a result is only meaningful when the report names the standard, the edition and any options the method allows.

Reading the Designation
EN ISO 13850: the designation as published by the issuing body.
Year suffix: the revision is identified by its year, as in EN ISO 13850-15. A specification that names an edition fixes that edition; a later revision does not apply to an order retroactively.
When a drawing, purchase order or quality procedure cites this document, the test setup, the specimen and the report follow that citation.
