ISO 2039-2 Plastics — Determination of hardness — Part 2: Rockwell hardness
At a Glance
Document type: Test Method.
Edition: edition ISO 2039-2:1987; a revision is under development as ISO/AWI 2039-2.
Property determined: hardness.
Scope
Specifies a method for determining the indentation hardness of plastics by means of a Rockwell hardness tester using the Rockwell M, L and R scales.
The Rockwell hardness number is derived from the net increase in depth of impression as the load on an indenter is increased from a fixed minor load to a major load and then returned to the same minor load.
What the Result Tells You
A test to ISO 2039-2 characterises the hardness of the material or assembly under the conditions the method fixes: specimen form, rate of loading and the environment in which the test is run.
Because the numbers depend on those fixed conditions, a result is only meaningful when the report names the standard, the edition and any options the method allows.
Related Standards
ISO 2039-1: the ball indentation part of the same series, where the depth is measured while the indenter is under load.
ASTM D785: the ASTM method for Rockwell hardness of plastics and electrical insulating materials.
Reading the Designation
ISO 2039-2: the designation as published by the issuing body.
Year suffix: the revision is identified by its year, as in ISO 2039-2-39. A specification that names an edition fixes that edition; a later revision does not apply to an order retroactively.
When a drawing, purchase order or quality procedure cites this document, the test setup, the specimen and the report follow that citation.
