The machine is used to test the dyeing of the fabric, and the fade degree of the leather after dry or wet rubbing. The test method involves the specimen to be fastened to the base of the crocking meter and rubbed with an abrasive hammer attached to a wet or a dry cloth under controlled conditions. The transfer of colour is then measured using a scale to evaluate the rating of the specimen's dyeing grade.

The only consumable is the AATCC Crockmeter Test cloth. These are to be cut into 2"x 2" straight edge squares which are then mounted on the test heads for the color analysis. A new piece of test cloth must be used for each new test specimen and test cycle.

The AATCC Test Method 8 is a method by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC).

ASTM recommends the use of AATCC Test Method 8 for analyzing the test results. AATCC Test Method 8 covers all textiles including those produced by yarn or fabric or materials that are dyed, printed or otherwise colored. By analyzing the results, a Grade value can be given to the material where:
Grade 5 = no color transfer
Grade 1 = high degree of color transfer

The process begins by mounting the abrasive pad over the abrasive head. The abrasive pad is a consumable and can be purchased through NextGen for your testing requirements. The specimen is then held in place by a simple clamping fixture. After setting the amount of test cycles, the machine is ready to start and will apply constant pressure to the test specimen. Analysis of color transfer can be done once the cycle count has been reached.

The ASTM D5053 industry standard involves the testing of leather materials. D5053 allows for the analysis of color transfer from leather onto other surfaces by rubbing under wet, dry or both conditions for extensive analysis.

The ASTM D2054 industry standards explains a process of determining the degree of color that may transfer from the textile tape of zippers onto other surfaces by the act of rubbing. This is possible to test in either wet or dry conditions and can be done in both conditions to analyze extensively.
